George Washington Middle School
Eleanor, West Virginia
304-586-2875
"This school was completed in 1938-39 for the Homestead Children."
Grades taught were first though ninth.
Today, this Middle School, houses classes sixth through eighth grade. Student attending are from Eleanor, Buffalo, Red House and surrounding areas. This picture was taken on May 16, 2000.
This beautiful old school caught fire Friday night, May 26th around 11 PM. After investigation by the State Fire Marshall, the fire was ruled arson. Many, many residents of the town, children and adults came out to watch, hoping and praying the fire could be contained. There were tears everywhere, this was not just a school that was burning, but a Historical landmark that housed many memories, from the first proud students that attended in 1939, to all who have entered it's doors though the years, including the children of today. It has brought us success, joy, celebration and happiness year after year. The fire may have destroyed the building, but nothing can destroy the memories. The first Commencement Exercises were held on May 25, 1939. The building caught fire on May 26, 2000, exactly, 61 years and one day later.
We are all so thankful that no students or teachers were in the building at the time of the fire.

The burnt out remains of this school are now gone, only a empty lot remains, a sad reminder of the great loss this community has suffered. The students who would have attended classes here are now in modular units located on land directly in front of the gymnasium.
As a part of the Federal Relief Program , this school was built to serve the children of this community. It is an important part of our history and our heritage. It is our hope that the school will be re-built and continue to serve the needs of the Middle School Students from Eleanor and the surrounding area.
Insurance money paid to the Board of Education for this school should be used for this purpose and this purpose alone.

"Thank You"
Arthurdale, West Virginia
It is with heart felt appreciation that we say "Thank You" to the students, faculty and parents of Valley Elementary School in Arthurale, West Virginia. Your generous gift of $1015 raised through school functions and donations to replace supplies and materials for the students of George Washington Middle School which were destroyed by fire in May 2000 goes beyond caring. To Arthurdale Heritage, Inc., we also say "Thank You" for your donation of books on Eleanor Roosevelt.

It is difficult to find the words to express our gratitude.
To have a "sister town" respond to the needs of the children in this community in such a positive way has surely created a lasting bond that far exceeds our historical beginnings. May your kindness be rewarded.
